Amtrak STEPS, USA
Amtrak’s OSSSO (Office of Security Strategy and Special Operations) turned to Mott MacDonald to create virtual station models for integration into the new SCRAM (Special Counter-Terrorism Risk and Asset Management) tabletop platform, to make decisions about safety and security procedures, as well as train operations. The models also enabled Station Access Teams (SATs) to consider crisis management planning and training tool at key stations.
Birmingham International Station Hub, UK
The importance of Birmingham International Station will increase following the opening of HS2, when it will both act as a gateway to the new High Speed Line for a wide area and will also see new and improved services to many parts of the UK. STEPS modelling was undertaken under normal operations in relation to future passenger demand levels to inform the design process and assess the circulation, state of congestion and density levels within the station.
Anfield Stadium, UK
Following the import of a 3D BIM model, pedestrian modelling analysis was carried out for multiple scenarios, including ingress, half-time break, normal egress and emergency evacuation. The assessment covered vertical circulation, clearance time of the tiers and levels of crowding on the concourses.
SEPTA Emergency Evacuation, USA
We used STEPS modelling results from the simulation to develop crowd management plans necessary to manage people arriving and leaving from these stations. Mitigation measures for crowd control with the aim of reducing overall congestion at the individual stations have been included to enable safe management of the large numbers of individuals. Measures included staging areas for passengers above and below ground and the potential redirection of passengers at the surface level to alternate stations depending on their final destination.
Sydney Metro, Australia
STEPS pedestrian modelling analysis was used to assess the provision of vertical transport facilities, ticket gates, platform and concourse areas and other key circulation routes for eight stations to ensure that the design provided an adequate level of service for customers in relation to future passenger growth.
